The next meeting is tomorrow 19th, at 5pm. It will be a reading group and the group will be speaking about some very short stories by Evelio Jose Rosero.

Meetings ater this will be on February 2 and 16, and March 1.

I have just finished reading this, and really enjoyed it. An excellent choice for a book group, provided everyone is aware of, and comfortable with, the explicit sexual scenes. As the previous commenter says, the book is really well written for the most part, and personally I found the characters and themes engaging. Hollinghurst is a contemporary author to treasure.

just finished the book and found it totaly intoxicating
a vast knowledge has pushed jacks london out of the b\w penny dreadfuls into full colour body and soul; all this and only using words.

I am waiting for the next one to come in to the library. I was wondering if it was appropriate for my 10 year old nephew who has read everything in his local library. I think it is – what do you reckon?

I agree, I read the series this summer after our son got them and told me that I’d really like them. I was a bit sceptical at first, but the story is gripping and the characterisation is complex enough to keep me engaged right through to the end of the third book.

I have just read this and as a whole it was interesting and thought provoking. In a couple of places the nitty gritty science bits left me a bit cold – but there was a real warmth to the human aspects and they more than carried the story through.
I think you could have written a story about this family without the HeLa cells and it would have been equally as intriguing. If it had of been fiction of course some areas could have been fleshed out, but it is still a very good read.
