January’s LCRG discussed the work of American crime novellist Megan Abbott, the Edgar-winning author of the novels Die a Little, The Song Is You, Queenpin and Bury Me Deep, which has been nominated for six awards: the 2010 Edgar Award, Hammett Prize, the Macavity, Anthony and Barry Awards and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize.
The group were unanimous in their enjoyment of Abbott’s novels, with one member suggesting she is ”the female Raymond Chandler”. The 1920s and ’30s American settings of the novels was particularly popular, tapping in as she does to the latest seam of interest in inter-war fashion and culture. Her style of writing went down very well with the group, with some members voicing their strong desire to read other novels she has written.
Next month’s group will discuss the novels of fellow American detective fiction legend James Lee Burke.
